Remember Mondale?

When Walter Mondale ran for President on the Democratic ticket in 1984, he said that taxes were going to have to be raised. He said taxes would be raised whoever was elected, but he was the only one willing to say so.

This is universally remembered as one of the great political blunders of all time. But here’s the thing. Mondale was right. Taxes had to be raised in 1986.

It says something about what is wrong with our politics that the Washington press corps and Washington political establishment condemns Mondale as a fool for having understood an important issue correctly and told the truth about it.
