Conservatives and liberals: the difference (4)

Liberals are like a doctor who tells somebody with cancer of the brain to go and take two aspirin.

Conservatives are like a doctor who tells somebody with cancer of the brain to go and shoot himself in the head.

Is a progressive a person who thinks he is above liberals and conservatives?

For the purpose of this series of posts, I define liberals and progressives as those who agree with Barack Obama, Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi and conservatives as those who agree with Mitch McConnell and John Boehner.

I used to think of conservatives as those who are primarily interested in preserving existing good things, and liberals and progressives as those who are primarily interested in creating new good things.

But this way of thinking doesn’t fit the world as it is. Self-described conservatives want to turn the world upside down. Many use expressions such as “radical conservative” or “conservative revolution.” Self-described liberals in contrast are primarily concerned with preserving or restoring the social gains of the past.

Another way to define the difference is that liberals and progressives identify with the underdog while conservatives identify with the top dog. A typical liberal, watching the Rodney King video, identifies with the person down on the ground being beaten up. A typical conservative identifies with the policeman faced with the need to subdue a dangerous black man. A good political philosophy would try to balance these attitudes.
