Jim Hightower was a populist Texas journalist and political activist. He became editor of the Texas Observer in 1976, then became director of the Texas Consumer Association, ran unsuccessfully for a Democratic nomination to the Texas Railroad Commission (which regulates the state oil industry) and eventually was elected to two terms as Texas Commissioner of Agriculture (1983-1991). Currently he is a writer and lecturer.
