The Greeks figured out pretty quickly that a republic was a much more realistic form of government over a direct democracy. And our government has always been a republic, in fact it’s right there in our Pledge of Allegiance.
With democracy quickly follows mob rule, and there is the unrealistic issue of expecting people to regularly participate and remain informed on the issues enough to vote on them.
Of course, our own representatives don’t always do that either, despite it being their sole purpose of being elected.
