‘Starving the beast’: public sector jobs decline

One of the reasons for the weakness of the current economic recovery is the loss of public sector jobs—mainly in state and local governments, including school districts.

It is not as if there is a lack of useful work for government workers to do.  Just to take two examples, there is a teacher shortage and there is a great need to rebuild the nation’s crumbling infrastructure.

I grant that many government agencies are top-heavy with overpaid executives and consultants.  But I doubt that these are the jobs that are being eliminated.
