The black and Hispanic top 1 percent

The disparity in wealth between black and Hispanic Americans on the one hand and non-Hispanic whites is striking.    The disparities in wealth within each racial group also are striking.

Hillary Clinton said during the 2016 presidential primaries that curbing the power of Wall Street would not, in and of itself, end racism in the United States.  This is true and important.

It is also true that racial equality will not, in and of itself, end the concentration of wealth and power in the United States in the hands of a tiny minority.

In interpreting the top chart, remember that “mean” or average is not the same thing as typical.   The figure is the total wealth held by whites, blacks or Hispanics, lumping together millionaires and paupers, and then dividing by the number of white, black or Hispanic households.
