What’s going on is that most state universities are operated as business enterprises.
Their football and basketball teams are their biggest money-makers. So very often are medical schools and research laboratories, which attract federal grants and corporate contracts and license valuable patents. And college presidents are chosen for their fund-raising prowess.
Long gone are the days, which were before my time, when college athletics were a recreation and character-building exercises for the students themselves.
This isn’t 100 percent true, but it is tru often enough to explain the chart.

The football coach was also the highest paid person at my high school, and our team royally sucked!
To add insult to injury, our principal had a PHD. The football coach taught weight training. He still out earned her.
