The danger of war with Russia over Syria

During the whole of the Cold War, American and Soviet troops never faced each other on the battlefield.  Both sides feared possible escalation into nuclear war.

If the United States proclaims a “no fly” zone in Syria or sends troops to create a “safe zone” for anti-Assad forces, there is a real danger of a shooting war between the United States and Russia.

The United States and Russia are the only two nations with enough nuclear weapons to destroy each other.  Presumably leaders of neither nation want this, but who knows what a direct Russian-American conflict could escalate into?  And for what?

Will Trump winning the election slow the progression into war?

I would not venture to predict what a Trump presidency would be.

He has said he wants to ease tensions with Russia, which is good. He is opposed to arming terrorist rebels in Syria, which is good.

On the other hand, he has boasted of how militaristic he would be, and of how he wouldn’t hesitate to use nuclear weapons. He also has proposed a “safe zone” in Syria, which would mean U.S. troops.

Beyond all that, he is temperamentally unstable. Insults make him lose control of himself. He has a record of going to great lengths to take revenge on those who oppose him or insult him. So I don’t know what he would do with the power of the Presidency.

My fears and concerns about Hillary Clinton are the opposite. I take her statements seriously, and her statements indicate she regards U.S. actions in Libya and Syria as a model of what to do.

I don’t see Trump as unstable as you express. But like his newest outreach to the blacks – which I think applies to far more persons; what have we got to lose?

All of us Americans, black and white, have something to lose, even though we may not think so.

Also, it is a mistake to think of all black Americans as poor, unemployed people living in crime-ridden slums.
