It’s past time to get out of Afghanistan

If President Donald Trump could get U.S. troops out of Afghanistan before he leaves office, this would be a good thing, not a bad thing.

The only reason for keeping them there is so the military can avoid admitting defeat.

I doubt if he can bring it off.  Even if he could, future President Joe Biden would almost certainly send the troops back.

If President Trump’s motivation is to clear the way for a wider war in the Middle East in the twilight of his administration, would that still seem good?

With Trump, you never know. I think his plan for a troop withdrawal would have been a good thing if he’d started it a ear ago.

      But then there’s this.

Trump has exposed a serious flaw in our constitutional government. Presidents need not act rationally or responsibly; important decisions can be made on a whim.

The main flaw in our Constitutional government is that our leaders do not follow the Constitution and we the people let them get away with it.

Article 1, Section 8, gives Congress (not the President) the authoirity to declare war. Congress also has the power of the purse and the power of impeachment.

Yet, as things work now, there are no checks and balances on a President’s authority to commit acts of war. Checks and balances only come into play when a President tries to make peace or end military action. The Caitlin Johnstone article tells how this worked with Trump.
